Thomas Dolan, Coolaghbaun, Hollymount, who died recently at the age of 94, was formerly of Glenaghagoshleen, Tourmakeady. A well known and highly respected member of the local community, Tom was a man of quiet and gentle disposition and news of his passing evoked much sadness in the locality.
He spent some years in America and England before returning to Mayo and settling into the rural way of life in the Hollymount and Roundfort area. A carpenter by trade, he worked on her restoration of Roundfort Church.
Tom also had a special love for the land and farming and he had a great respect for the environment and nature. Like so many others in the region down through the years, he was most comfortable with mixed farming and was renowned for his kindness to the animals in his care.
For many years Tom served as caretaker at Roundfort Cemetery and he took great pride in the upkeep of the cemetery which was always maintained at a very high standard.
He had a great “gra” for motorbikes and journeyed to many destinations on his own faithful motorbike over the years.
Tom took an active interest in current affairs and matters of a political nature and was influenced over the years by Eamon De Valera of whom he was a staunch supporter in former times.
Removal took place from Gilligan's Funeral Home in Claremorris to Roundfort Church with burial after Requiem Mass in the nearby cemetery which he took such fond and devoted care of for many years. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Michael Molloy, P.P., assisted by Canon Willie Walsh and Fr. Albert Lyons.
Thomas is deeply regretted sister-in-law Ann Dolan, nieces, nephews, including the O'Gradys' in Massachusetts and Texas and Fr. Colmcille O'Grady (nephew in America), relations, neighbours and friends.
